Darwin provides final test ahead of Commonwealth Games

Wednesday 1 September 2010

The majority of Australia’s top shotgun shooters will line up this weekend for Australia Cup 4 at the Darwin Clay Target Club.

Australia Cup 4, which also serves as the Northern Territory State Titles, will be held from September 3-5, and commences exactly a month out from the start of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Five members of the eight shotgun shooters selected on the 2010 Australian Commonwealth Games Team will compete in Darwin as they look to reach peak form and challenge for Commonwealth medals.

Adam Vella (VIC) will enter the men’s trap as the favourite for the title, while Russell Mark (VIC) and Nicholas Kirley (VIC) will contest the men’s double trap.

Anthony Sottosanti (VIC) and Laetisha Scanlan (VIC) are the final two Commonwealth Games athletes in action, as they contest the men’s skeet and women’s trap respectively.

Australia Cup 4 also serves as one of the ranking events on the Australian calendar, where athletes can attempt to score a Performance Qualifying Score (PQS) that gains them consideration for World Cup and World Championships selection.

The 20-year-old Berwick resident says Darwin will provide good competition ahead of Delhi.

“After the World Championships in July there has not been much competition so Darwin will give all of us a good chance to prepare for Delhi,” Scanlan said.

“The whole Commonwealth Games experience is one that I can’t wait to enjoy. To represent Australia at any competition is amazing and I am looking forward to testing myself against the best shooters in the Commonwealth.”
