| Australian team targets strong showing in Milan

The Australian pistol and rifle teams will have their penultimate chance to impress national selectors when the 2012 Milan World Cup commences this evening (May 15).
With athletes set to be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee following the conclusion of the next World Cup in Munich (May 23-27), Australia’s 15-member team will all target strong performances in Italy.
Following a bronze medal in the men’s 3 position rifle at the Pilsen Grand Prix in the Czech Republic last week, Dane Sampson (QLD) will aim to continue his excellent form.

| Australia tastes success in Germany
|
Australia’s Paralympic Shooting Team has enjoyed a good start to the 2012 international season, winning two bronze medals in Hannover, Germany over the weekend.
For the first time Hannover organised an international competition with Olympic and Paralympic shooters competing side by side with more than 1400 athletes competing from 35 nations.
Ashley Adams continued his fine preparations ahead of the London Games with a bronze medal in the R3 Air Prone event with a qualifying score of 600, before shooting 104.7 in the final. The Queenslander also produced scores of 588 in Air Standing, 588 in Prone and 1138 in 3P across a busy competition schedule.

| Rifle team enjoys stay in Varese
|
The Australian rifle team has enjoyed the perfect preparation at the Australian Institute of Sport’s European Training Centre in Varese over the past few days.
Led by coach Petr Kurka, squad members Will Godward, Dane Sampson, Chris Gulvin, Thomas Versace and Robyn Van Nus enjoyed the numerous benefits offered by the state of the art facility in northern Italy.
The team arrived in Varese following the Pilsen GP in the Czech Republic and spent five days at the ETC and nearby Varese Shooting Range. The Varese range has been fitted out with the same shooting tables as the range that is hosting the Milan World Cup that gets underway tomorrow evening (May 15).

I am pleased to advise the Gillard Government will continue to deliver strong funding for sport and participation in the 2012-13 Budget. The Budget reaffirms the Government’s commitment to invest in the future of sport in Australia and includes funding for both community sport and our elite athletes. The Gillard Government will invest over $300 million in ongoing funding in 2012-13 to support grassroots participation and high performance programs. More than $120 million will be provided to promote participation and continue a range of successful national programs that engage the community. Over $170 million in funding will be dedicated to high performance sport to ensure Australia can continue to pursue sporting excellence.

| Call for EOI to host Aus Cups 2013

Australian International Shooting Limited is seeking expressions of interest from clubs or associations to conduct rounds of the Australia Cup.
Expression of Interest to host Australia Cups 2013
These competitions are the premier domestic event on the AISL calendar and an important competition for the athletes. The Australia Cup is an open class competition in that there are no grades or junior events.
The series also provides the opportunity for range officials to develop their skills at a high level competition open to International Competitors.
Expressions of Interest are due by July 1, 2012. |

Do you know a Local Sporting Champion?
Are you, or do you know, a dedicated young athlete, coach or official participating in a state or national sporting championships? Are you aged 12-18 years old travelling further than 250km return for a state or national championships?
If yes, then you or your team could be eligible for a Local Sporting Champions grant to help meet costs such as uniforms, travel, accommodation and equipment.
Grants of $500 per individual and $3,000 per team are available for young people participating in a nominated National Sporting Organisation-endorsed state or national sporting championships or a School Sport Australia national championship.
